GREG DOCHERTY was left ‘speechless’ as he put pen-to-paper on a four-and-a-half-year deal with boyhood heroes Rangers.

The midfielder became the fifth signing of the summer for boss Graeme Murty on Thursday evening following the completion of his move from Hamilton.

Docherty could make his Light Blues bow in the Premiership clash with Ross County this weekend.

And he can’t wait to live his boyhood dream and get down to business with the Gers as he looks to play his part in bringing success back to Ibrox.

Docherty said: “I’m speechless to be honest. It means so much and words can’t explain how much this means to me and my family as well.

“This club has a special place in my heart, so to be a part of something special is really exciting.

“For me play for Rangers – and I’ve always dreamed of playing for Rangers during my career – but for it to come so early is just an extra bonus and when I heard of the interest, there was only one place for me.

“It’s such an appealing platform – you look at the facilities which are second to none. I had a tour of the training ground today, and that’s incredible that everything is there for you to go on and kick-on even further.

“I want to be part of something special here, and I think that is the plan. That’s what was sold to me by Mark Allen etc. – they told about their five-year plan here to move on and get Rangers back where they belong.”

Docherty has emerged as one of the brightest young talents in Scottish football in recent years as he has made his mark with Accies.

Rangers agreed a £680,000 deal with the SuperSeal Stadium board as the Scotland youth international followed Sean Goss, Jamie Murphy, Russell Martin and Jason Cummings in signing on the dotted line for Murty’s side.

Docherty faces stiff competition for a starting spot this season but he is determined to rise to the challenge and follow in the footsteps of two of his boyhood heroes at Ibrox.

He told RangersTV: “Barry Ferguson and Steven Davis. Davis more recently, but Barry Ferguson, particularly in the UEFA Cup run.

“Both guys have captained the club at different points and gone on to have fantastic careers. I’d like to emulate them and hopefully have a career just as good as theirs in a Rangers jersey. If I can do that, I’ll be happy.

“As a player, I’m direct, and I’d like to say I’m strong and a powerful runner that can contribute at the top end of the pitch.

“Hopefully I can contribute some assists and goals, and excite the fans a little bit.”
