GRAEME MURTY has urged his players to make the most of their chance to write their names in Rangers folklore alongside the greats of the past.

The Light Blues moved up to second spot in the Premiership standings with a 2-0 win over Aberdeen on Wednesday night.

But Murty has far higher ambitions for his side as he looks to lay the foundations for another successful era at Ibrox.

He said: “I was sat next to a table of Rangers legends at a Burns Supper [on Thursday].

“And I want this team to be able to stand with those legends – by being brilliant, by being great.

“The challenge is always not just to live up to those guys, but to be worthy of standing alongside them.

“These great players, the thing that really came through for me was their depth of feeling for the club.

“We had big Marvin [Andrews], the Goalie (Andy Goram), Archie Knox was there. Everyone was there.

“You are looking at those guys and thinking: ‘You know what? That’s part of the history here.’

“You see the history when you come to the club. But seeing the guys who made that history, it makes you hungry.

“It’s fine to look up to them. But we want to emulate them, to be able to stand alongside them.

“If we do our job properly, we’ll create a culture that is designed to let us do that.

“They still have a real burning passion for the club, these great players.

“This club gets under your skin, I said that from the day I came in.

“It’s a very, very special place. That’s why I will never take this position for granted – nor should any of the players.

“They should feel remarkably privileged every single day, to get the chance to work hard and become a really, really good Rangers player.”

Murty has added five players to his squad so far this month as Rangers look to close the gap to Celtic and win the Scottish Cup this term.

A trip to Ross County is next on the Gers’ agenda tomorrow and boss Murty knows there is only one way for his side to make a lasting impression on the Light Blue legions.

He said: “I think we’re capable of challenging at the top of this league. I think we’re capable of challenging for every competition we’re in.

“It’s our challenge to see how far that takes us, because we have an obligation to be a good Rangers team.

“And good Rangers teams have backed up quality play with success – and silverware.

“That’s the challenge to the team. It’s not just a challenge to be a good team for four games out of six. You need to be good over a sustained period – and sustain a challenge in every competition.”
