PARTICK THISTLE hitman Conor Sammon insists he’s not thinking about his own future as he takes aim at firing the Jags up the Premiership table.

The Irishman has been in formidable form of late for the Firhill club, banging in six goals in his last six games with the most recent coming in the 3-2 loss at Celtic Park on Scottish Cup duty at the weekend.

Sammon is on loan from Hearts until the end of the season with a further year on his Tynecastle deal left to run when he returns in the summer.
But the striker has vowed he won’t be getting distracted about any uncertainty while there is a job to do at Thistle.

“At a stage in my life personally and professional. Trying to get better, even at my age,” he said.

“I’m here until the end of the season on loan. I have a year at hearts left after this season, and to be honest I’ve not given it a second thought. I’m really enjoying my football at the moment and playing and scoring for Thistle.

“It’s about keeping that up and helping the team do well. I’m a great believer that things will take care of themselves if you take care of your job on the pitch.

“I haven’t heard much [from Hearts] but I’m fully aware they have their own thing going on. They are doing really well in the league and in the cup, too. I’ve not had any real dialogue with the club but I get on well with the lads. So who knows what will happen?”

Sammon’s turnaround in form is rather something given the Dubliner went on a 14-game run before eventually opening his Jags account against Motherwell in December.

Since then there’s only been one game he’s not hit the mark, and the 31-year-old has pinpointed that 3-2 win on December 13 as being the catalyst for his success.

“It was frustrating at times at Partick Thistle when I first joined,” he explained. “I was in and out, starting then out for two. There was no real run of games which you need to get up to speed. As a striker your position gets chopped and changed quite a bit if things aren’t going well in football.

“It was a case of putting in the hard word and give yourself the best possible chance and that’s what I’ve done over the last five or six weeks. I want to keep that momentum going for my goals and wins.

“That first goal was huge. As a striker with a new club you want to get off the mark and get your first goal to give you that confidence. As a forward you thrive on that. You think on instinct and you’re freer on the pitch.

“Getting that goal against Motherwell was a big time for me. It helped us get three points when we were really fighting. It’s come from good habits and hard work.”

Sammon’s last goal came at the weekend in that narrow 3-2 loss to Celtic, but he insists there were positives to take.

“We knew going in that it was going to be a tough challenge for us to get through and beat them on their home turf. They haven’t dropped many points and have been very consistent,” said Sammon.

“It was a great challenge and we’ve played them and rangers a lot recently. You want that, to test yourself. We were frustrated at the start to concede so early but credit to us for make Celtic hang on in the last few minutes.”
