Love is in the air at this time of the year and I’ve been reflecting on my own relationship with Rangers which started half a century ago. I can’t believe it’s 50 years since I signed S-forms with the club back in 1968.

When I was 14 or 15, I was the same height as I am now. I was a big lad for my age and I would score plenty of goals. Even at that young age, I’d had spells at Aston Villa, Preston and Arsenal. I was being watched.

Eventually Rangers came to my door and they made it difficult for me to refuse. Normally you’d be asked to come to Ibrox and sign on but they came to my house in Fintry in Dundee as I was only 14.

They were so desperate to sign me! Funnily enough, I had Celtic and Rangers at my door on the same day within a couple of hours. Jock Stein was the first in my house trying to sign me and when he left, the Rangers scout was about half an hour behind him and came up.

He’d been waiting at the bottom of the street until Mr Stein left. Imagine if I’d done the other thing and signed for Celtic? My whole life may have been very different.
