JAMES TAVERNIER is confident Rangers are on the right track to take themselves to the next level.

The right-back committed his future to the Light Blues this week as he put pen-to-paper on a new three-and-a-half year deal.

Tavernier was part of the side that won the Championship and Petrofac Training Cup in his first season and has now targeted the Premiership title and Champions League football in the coming campaigns.

He said: “We have made really good progress. Mark (Warburton) brought myself and a few others to the club initially and there’s now doubt that the gaffer now has added some more quality.

“The gaffer is laying down some pretty strong foundations and our squad is getting better and better.

“I believe we’re at the stage where we can really compete. We did that against Celtic the last time we played them and we probably should have won the game.

“We have shown good form against Aberdeen, it’s the other games where we have to show more consistency.

“We have beaten Aberdeen three times this season but we are still below them in the league.

“That is where we have let ourselves down so we know where we need to improve.

“I would say the biggest change for me is that now we have a better quality of player.

“The boys have been together for a while now and the gaffer has added new guys who are determined to take the club to next level so we all have the right mind-set.

“We’ve taken a lot of confidence from some of the performances we’ve had but it’s all about being more consistent.”
