WES FODERINGHAM got a taste of what Jamie Murphy was capable of during his days in League One.

Now he is delighted to see the winger starring for Rangers after making a stunning start to life in Light Blue.

It is three years since Murphy inspired Sheffield United to a victory over Swindon and beat keeper Foderingham with a brace at Brammall Lane.

The pair are now team-mates at Ibrox and had crucial parts to play on Saturday as Graeme Murty’s side beat Hearts.

Murphy netted his third goal in as many games in the 2-0 win and Foderingham has been impressed at how quickly he has settled this term.

He said: “I think Jamie Murphy has made a big difference to us since he has come in. I have always liked Jamie as a player.

“I played against him a lot in League One and he was always fantastic. He has done a really, really good job since he has come in.

“From the team’s point of view, I just think we have been very, very good going forward.

“He is just a good player. He is just an all-round decent footballer. He has that ability to go past somebody with ease.

“He scored a few against me! I particularly remember one at Bramall Lane when he was playing for Sheffield United.

“He ran from the edge of the box in a counter attack and managed to dink me. He reminded me of that one when he joined!

“So when he scored that great goal on Saturday I wasn’t surprised. I knew he had that in his locker. He is a really, really good footballer.

“He is a creative player. He is a tidy footballer in possession as well. He is very direct. He has made a really big difference.”

Victory over Hearts ensured Rangers will be three points clear of Aberdeen when they take to the field against St Johnstone this evening.

James Tavernier and Josh Windass recently penned new deals to commit their long-term futures to the Light Blues.

And Foderingham reckons there are positives on and off for the Gers as Murty’s side look to finish the season in style.

He said: “There have been a couple of games that stick out when we haven’t done too well, but, on the whole, over the course of the season, we haven’t done too badly.

“Obviously, there have been new players coming in to the back line. On the whole we’ve done well, but there are definitely areas we can improve in. Getting a clean sheet in the last game definitely helps our confidence at the back.

“In an ideal world you would like to have a settled defence but in football new players came in and sometimes you get injuries.

“The new boys who have come in have done really well and we’re starting to gel and you can see the team looks a lot more comfortable.

“You want to try and keep your best players at the club. There have been reports of Alfredo Morelos possibly leaving and it’s good to see players want to stay and commit their future.

“Tav signed a new deal which is fantastic as he’s been a top footballer for the club and going forward, tying down as many of your key players as possible is a big thing.”
