Dorus de Vries is ready to play a full part in Celtic quest to complete back-to-back trebles this season.

The Dutch goalkeeper spent the bulk of last term on the outside looking in as Brendan Rodgers completed an unbeaten clean sweep.

And de Vries has acknowledged that any silverware handed out this summer will be relished given that he will have had a more significant role in the earning of it.

“When I was down south I was used to playing 50-odd games a season and that is what you want,” he said. “It is great for me to be in this position just now and I just want to go out and give it my best shot. There are some very interesting and exciting games coming up and I want to play a part in it.

“You always feel a little bit out of it when you are not playing. That is nothing to do with the squad or the players it just comes from yourself. But it is a team game and now that I am in the position I want to do my best for the team.”

If the affable goalkeeper found himself in the eye of the storm last week following Celtic’s defeat to Zenit St Petersburg in Russia, he did a decent job of allowing the white noise to sail over his head.

His “knuckleball” description of the goal he conceded, the second of a trio on the night in St Petersburg, caused something of a hullaballo but the keeper himself is determined to look ahead rather than behind.

In that respect the clean sheet secured at Pittodrie on Sunday afternoon was critical and De Vries is determined to maintain a level of performance between the sticks.

Celtic host Neil McCann’s Dundee this evening before squaring up to Morton on Saturday afternoon on Scottish Cup duty. With Craig Gordon expected to be out until the end of the season, De Vries has his eyes on putting in some convincing performances between now and the culmination of the campaign.

“As soon as you build up a little bit of momentum you just want to carry it on,” he said. “It was important to me to get a clean sheet against Aberdeen. I was pleased with it.

“It was a big game for me but for also for us and I thought as a team we played really well. If you look at our performance and the way we bounced back it showed the true character that we have in the team. We have the focus too and that is what it is about at this stage.

“The pitch wasn’t great but we were able to grind out the result and now we want to focus on the remaining 10 league games of the season. I am really proud of the guys in front of me.”

One of those in front of the keeper is Kristoffer Ajer. The 19-year-old Norwegian sustained a head injury in the build-up to Aberdeen’s most dangerous attack of the afternoon and De Vries believes that the youngster has all the hallmarks of an influential centre-half.

“I think he was a little bit afraid that his good looks would be ruined on Sunday!” he joked. “He has a big bruise and a black eye but hopefully he will be ok. You get those knocks when you are going in to battle the game.

“But he is a really great player. Kristoffer can go on and have a big future in the game. He is strong in the tackle, he throws himself at everything but he is also very assured with the ball at his feet. He obviously still has a lot to learn at this level but he is one of a few very exciting players that are here at the club.”

Another of those is Kieran Tierney, the pretender to the captain’s throne at the club.

The Scotland internationalist put himself on the scoresheet on Sunday and De Vries enjoyed the goal as much as the travelling support in the stand.

“I laughed when people spoke of Kieran still having the energy to run back to celebrate his goal – if you know KT then you would know that he could keep going like that for another three hours!” smiled the keeper. “He is fit, he is fast and he is strong and there is such a good nucleus of young players here at the club. I think it is exciting to have that because you are building a team for a long time then.

“Moussa [Dembele] also done so well for his part in the goal in that game. It is great for us that we have those big players in the squad. They relish the big games and there will be a few of them on the horizon now. Lots of people forget that Moussa is still very young too. There is so much more to come not only from him but from us as a team, I think.”
