Brendan Rodgers is set for further dialogue with Alex McLeish and the SFA this week as Celtic look for players to be absolved of international duty in June.

Scotland have arranged friendlies against Peru and Mexico but with the games cutting into the relatively short break for Celtic players given the early Champions League qualifiers, the Parkhead side will appeal for a pass.

McLeish and Rodgers have spoken briefly since the former was handed the reigns of the national team but further talks are expected to take place next week in order to broker a compromise.

Rodgers has spoken already about the application for common-sense as Celtic seek to fly the flag for Scotland at Europe’s premier competition but it remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached.

“We had a brief chat about it, in terms of the individual players, but I’ll speak to Alex more about that over the course of the next week or so,” said Rodgers. “But we’ve had a preliminary discussion about it.

“It’s fair say there has been a huge burden on our players this season, mentally and physically.

“It was a really short turnaround for the majority of them after last season.

“There are going to be some who need the recovery and rest. We will speak on that and see what’s going to be best.”

Meanwhile, Rodgers has insisted that the Celtic players who are off on World Cup duty to Russia this summer will not necessarily get any down time before it.

The Parkhead side are in the hunt for another domestic Treble and Rodgers has maintained that he needs all his players to put their shoulder to the wheel.

Tom Rogic, Mikael Lustig and Dedryck Boyata will all head to the tournament while Moussa Dembele has not given up hope of pushing for a place in the French squad.

However, Rodgers has insisted that between now and then the full focus has to be on Celtic as the club seeks to complete a successful campaign.

There had been a suggestion that some of those might be granted time off before the season reaches its conclusion, but Rodgers has not considered that.

“My priority is Celtic and I need to have as many players available as possible,” said the Hoops boss.

“It’s going to be great for the guys going to the World Cup this summer, once they are there. The rest and recovery for that will be built in to that but for now, until the middle of May, it is full steam ahead for the majority of our players.”
