Kieran Tierney has revealed that Celtic’s Ibrox goal hero was the quiet man when he walked into the visiting dressing room in the aftermath of yesterday’s 3-2 win.

Odsonne Edouard came off the bench to net the winner as ten-man Celtic twice came from behind to take all three points against Rangers. In doing so the Parkhead side effectively doused cold water on any illusion of a title race as they move 9 points clear with a game in hand.

As the Parkhead side celebrated a result that means they have gone 9 successive games unbeaten against Rangers and have enjoyed four successive wins at Ibrox for the first time in the modern era, Tierney revealed that the man who delivered the moment was the calmest man in the Hoops dressing room.

“What a goal it was,” said the left-back. “He came into the dressing room after the game when everyone was buzzing and he was still his usual quiet self.

“I am sure he was thrilled with it but he is a big calm lad and he just came strolling into the dressing room after the game. We were delighted for him. It was a really brilliant finish – and a really great pass from Moussa [Dembele] to put him through.

“I think the goal just underlined our belief. Even when we went to ten men we wanted to win it. We knew we needed everyone to fight for every ball but we still had that drive and confidence to go and get the goal. The quality in the goal just showed what we have got.”

Jozo Simunovic’s red card meant that Celtic played with ten men for 35 minutes of the second period, something that Tierney was keen to point out the complexities of.

And despite the numerical disadvantage, the Scotland internationalist maintained that he expected Celtic to go and push for a winner.

“We always believe in ourselves,” said Tierney. “The manager has made it clear to us what we do in any game what happens if we go down to ten men or if the opposition go down to ten men and being able to adapt to different situations when you are under pressure is a part of playing football

“We didn’t just play for ten minutes at the end of the game with a man down, we played for more than half an hour which is a long time to be a man down in a big pressured match.

“The last ditch defending was tremendous and there wasn’t a guy in our team who didn’t put everything on the line to make sure that we got what we wanted.

“Every single player gave everything they had and that is what you need to do. You see the unity we have in the team and that is important.

“I haven’t had a chance to see the incident with Jozo back but he will have been upset to go off. From our point of view it was about digging it to make sure that we got the win for him as well. He was buzzing after it because it doesn’t matter how you win the game just that you go out and win it.

“I think we showed so much character to come back twice from a goal down and to then go on and win the game. There was a lot of pressure on us but I think we done well to keep our focus and make sure that we just went out and done our job.

“It was the same when we lost that opening goal so early on in the game. It was disappointing but I think the main thing was that we knew we had to stay calm. It can happen but we knew that we had to stick to our game plan and carry on. Everybody in the team and the manager and the coaches have to take huge amounts of credit for it because we all worked our socks off to get that win.”

There had been a lot of hype in the build-up to the game but Tierney has maintained that just as Celtic were deaf to the noise before the game, they will carry on in the same vein now as they look to round off the season.

“We tried not to listen too much to the build-up to the game,” he said. “We stuck to a game plan, we worked all week and in some ways it felt sweet because we went down to ten men and we really had to work for it. The odds were against us at times in the game.

“It is the same again now. People can talk and say what they want about the league or whatever but we just want to use this as step into the last few months of the season and keep the hard work going until then.”

Celtic were right to enjoy their celebrations at the end of the encounter – with Tierney leading the party.

“I don’t think there were many people in the crowd that I didn’t know,” he smiled. “It was brilliant at the end to go and enjoy the win after working so hard for it. The fans really drove us on and although that sounds like a bit of a cliché, they really backed us all the way. It was nice to send them home with a result. It is a joy to play for them.”
