Tom Boyd believes that Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson can compliment one another on the left-hand side at international level.

The duo have been called into Alex McLeish’s squad for the forthcoming friendlies against Costa Rica and Hungary at the end of this month.

There has been come consternation about whether both players can play together but former Scotland internationalist Boyd believes that the obvious answer is to feature Tierney and Robertson on the left-side.

“I think he [Tierney] can work with Andy Robertson,” said Boyd who was capped 72 times for Scotland. “You can have one left-back and one left midfield and work between the two. You can accommodate where they are both happy and where they are both good. You can change it through the course of the game to spell one another. Both are very good defenders and both are very comfortable going forward so it looks like the perfect combination on that left side.”

And Boyd also believes that Tierney is the obvious candidate to take over the captaincy following the international retirement of Scott Brown.

McLeish was coy on who could be the next skipper but Brown would like Tierney to take the accolade.

“He could be,” said Boyd. “He is somebody who can get respect the way he does from his fellow players despite such a young age. He has got that through his level of performances.”
