RANGERS defender Russell Martin says that sectarian abuse he received while out shopping hasn’t put him off staying in Glasgow, and he has reaffirmed his desire to remain at the Ibrox club beyond the summer.

The 32-year-old was in a shop when approached by a man who called him an ‘orange b*****d’ and a ‘hun p***k’ while videoing the encounter to publish on social media.

To his credit, Martin ignored the attention he was receiving and walked away from the incident, and he insisted after Saturdays disappointing defeat to Kilmarnock that the incident was the exception rather than the rule during his life in the city so far.

“It’s one of those things,” said Martin. “It’s the first time it’s happened, and I don’t think it’s a regular occurrence for any of the lads.

“It is what it is. I didn’t think anything of it to be honest until I got a phone call about it.

“It’s disappointing, but it’s not indicative of the people up here or what I have found at all. It’s a really small minority, and we move on.

“I want to be here, despite today, and there’s still la lot to play for. We have the cup and we need to finish second in the league, it’s as simple as that,

“We need to try and haul the points back, and I’m enjoying everything about being at the football club.

“I’ve made it known that I want to stay, so I will have to keep doing well enough to make sure that happens.”

On the field, Martin was left frustrated as he passed up the two best opportunities that Rangers created at Ibrox on Saturday, glancing just past the post in the first half before crashing a late header off the underside of the bar and onto the upright.

“One of them has got to go in,” he said.

“It’s disappointing. I thought the second one was in, but it’s hit the bar and the post and did everything but go in.

“It was one of those games when we weren’t quite at it, and it might just have taken one of them, a set-piece for us to get a goal because we haven’t really created much compared to recent weeks.

“It was the first time in a long time we haven’t hit the levels we have recently, and that’s the frustrating thing.

“They didn’t create much and neither did we, but the least you need to do in games like that is get the clean sheet and a 0-0, take a point and move on when you aren’t at your best.

“We haven’t managed to do that and that’s disappointing.”
