Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has intimidated that he would like to keep Odsonne Edouard on a permanent deal at the Parkhead club but was coy on the exact figure that would enable that to happen.

There appeared to be a suggestion that Celtic’s buy-out close for Edouard would be triggered with a £7m transfer fee between the club and PSG, whom Edouard is on loan from.

Rodgers, though, has insisted that the figure quoted is inaccurate although he did confirm that there is a buy-out clause agreed between the two clubs.

The 20-year-old striker has netted 8 goals so far this season for the club, the most high profile of which came against Rangers when he came off the bench to score the winner.

Rodgers has repeatedly enthused about the raw talent of the French under-21 internationalist but he will wait until the end of the season before making a call on whether or not Odsonne will become a permanent feature of Celtic’s squad. It is expected that any fee for the player would represent a record transfer figure for the Parkhead side although Rodgers would not speculate on that.

“Where have you got the figure from?” said Rodgers in response to the perceived £7m figure that has been quoted for Edouard. “No – it’s not that. I’m not telling you what it is, but it’s not that.

“I’ve said from day dot that I see the player every day and he’s one of the most gifted players I’ve worked with.

“Because his representatives aren’t running about throwing him to every club under the sun it doesn’t mean he’s not a top player.

“There’s no propaganda around him, but he’s a top talent.

“He’s settled in well and if we have any chance to do something at the end of the season then we can look at that.”

Rodgers is wary of too much speculation around the striker given the fact that he does not belong to Celtic. With the Parkhead side chasing a back-to-back treble between now and the end of the season and Leigh Griffiths still sidelined with a calf injury it is expected that Edouard will feature significantly for the club in the run in.

And Rodgers will wait until the end of the campaign before confirming what the next step will be in relation to Edouard.

“We have to respect he’s a PSG player, not a Celtic player,” he said.

“There is a clause in the deal.

“The clause is there and there’s been an agreement but we would need to trigger the fee. There’s a lot to do in terms of the bigger picture too. In time we’ll see.

“He’s a fantastic player and we’ll see between now and the end of the season.”
