Leigh Griffiths is determined to take himself a step closer to Celtic's century club this Sunday as the Hoops prepare for the Scottish Cup semi-final against Rangers at Hampden on Sunday afternoon.

The striker came off the bench to net the winner against ten-man Hamilton Accies yesterday afternoon to take his tally to 98.

Griffiths’ stats make for impressive reading – 98 goals in 178 appearances, 73 of which have come in the league from 116 appearances.

Whether his goal yesterday is enough to seal a start for the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final remains to be seen but the player is thrilled that he is finally closing in on the 100-club.

“We definitely have six game to go, hopefully seven, so I am looking forward to every one of them,” he said.

“You never know,” he continued when asked about a starting berth for Sunday’s meeting against the Ibrox side. “It is a difficult one for the manager.

“It is a massive game and everyone is chomping at the bit to play the game. The manager has a selection headache to pick 11 players. If I am selected I will give my best, if not I will hopefully be on the bench and do what I did against Hamilton.”

Rodgers applauded the contribution of Griffiths but insisted that he has no headache over which of the three fit strikers takes the starting jersey.

Both Dembele and Odsonne Edouard scored at Ibrox last month as Celtic came twice from behind to win 3-2, a game that Griffiths had to watch from his place among the Hoops fans as he recovered from a calf injury.

“Leigh came on and did really, really well and, once we get the second goal, we don’t need to force the game,” said Rodgers. “Leigh didn’t give me a problem for the semi-final – it’s just brilliant to have him back. He was excellent when he came on, his header for the goal was good and his movement was great.

“He’s working his way back to fitness and we had to be careful with him, especially on this pitch, which is why he didn’t start. But it worked well for us when we took a defender off and put that extra attacker on.”

Meanwhile, Callum McGregor admitted that it was a struggle to see yesterday’s game out but is delighted that the league title is just one win away for the Parkhead side. And the Scotland internationalist has insisted that there will be a bit of swagger back on view from Celtic as they finish off the campaign.

“It was a bit of a grind but we got there in the end,” said the midfielder who netted the opening goal. “It is within touching distance for us now. Next week will look after itself.

“It was good to get the result.

“We’ve been trying to get back to that aggressive style of play with counter-attacking and counter-pressing. That has been lacking a wee bit in the last few weeks but we want to put our foot to the floor for the last six or seven games we have left of the season.

“We want to try and finish with a flourish.”
