PARTICK Thistle great John Lambie passed away on Tuesday aged 77.

The charismatic manager achieved legend status during three spells at Firhill, earning a place in the club's hall of fame.

Lambie racked up more than 400 appearances during his playing days for Falkirk and St Johnstone, but it was in the dugout that he was to make his mark.

He became assistant manager to Bertie Auld at Hamilton Academical in 1984 but soon stepped up to the top job and enjoyed immediate success by securing the First Division title in 1985/86 and 1987/88 .

His first spell at Thistle arrived in 1988, but he returned to Accies just a year later before then bouncing back to Firhill in 1990.

In his second spell with the Jags, Lambie led them to the Premier Division in 1992 where they remained for the next three seasons.

He moved back to former club Falkirk for the 1995/96 campaign but departed in March and after a three-year hiatus he returned to Thistle in 1999.

Lambie's third spell saw him rescue a side in danger of dropping to the Third Division and inspire them to back-to-back promotions to the top-flight.

He retired from management in 2003 to take up a seat on the Jags board and was awarded the position of Honorary Vice President of the club in August 2006.
