Lee Wallace and Kenny Miller are awaiting official communication from Rangers to find out the exact reasons why they have been suspended by the Ibrox club.

The pair were summoned to a meeting with Stewart Robertson, the Rangers managing director, at Ibrox at 10 o’clock yesterday morning and were told they were being suspended pending an investigation.

It follows an alleged bust-up between the club captain, vice-captain and manager Graeme Murty following the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final loss to Celtic at Hampden on Sunday.

The players are believed to have been involved in heated exchanges with Murty in the dressing room after the 4-0 defeat even though neither of them played in the match. However, a source close to both of the experienced Scotland internationalists told Herald Sport the duo are unsure why the matter has escalated as it has done.

They were only told by Robertson that they were being suspended at the brief meeting yesterday and they are now awaiting an official letter outlining the reasons.

The source said: “They have been suspended from the club and are awaiting an official communication stating the reasons why. It is basic employment law. There is a procedure the club has to follow. It has to be put in black and white. They want to find out what the club have to say.

“Heated discussions in dressing rooms are ten a penny, happen in dressing rooms up and down the country. If players were suspended every time that happened there would be a lot of suspended players.”

Earlier in the day, a Rangers insider told Herald Sport that the alleged incident on Sunday was just one contributing factor to action being taken yesterday.

The source said: “This is a culmination of what the powers at be believe has been disruptive behaviour in the squad. Nobody’s personal agenda will override the needs of the club and nobody is bigger than Rangers.”

A club statement read: “Rangers can confirm two players, Lee Wallace and Kenny Miller, have this morning been suspended pending investigation into a team related incident. The club will make no further comment until this investigation has been completed.”

Former Rangers captain, and Evening Times columnist Lee McCulloch, meanwhile, insisted that both players will “be hurting” following their suspension.

McCulloch shared a dressing room with both players but they are now fighting for their Rangers careers.

“Kenny has got an opinion and that is what you need, I think,” McCulloch told Herald Sport.

“Especially when the stakes are as high as they are at the Old Firm. More opinions are better, but I don’t know what has happened in this case. They might have been out of order or they might not.

“They are two big characters in the changing room so it would be a big loss. If they are not going to be back, then the two boys will be hurting with what has happened.

“I am sure neither of them will have wanted to end their Rangers careers like this. But let’s just wait and see what happens and see if that is the case and if they play again.

“It is not a nice situation and not a nice way to end your career at such a great club and after such good service. We will need to wait and see.

“I don’t know what has happened here or if they have been over the score.

“What I do know is that I have been in many dressing rooms where they have been arguments at half-time or the end of a game and people have squared up to each other.

“After a game against your biggest rivals when you have been beaten 4-0 it would be alarming if people didn’t have something to say.”
