There is not much that James Forrest has not ticked off his Celtic bucket list.

A goal against Rangers, though, has so far proved elusive, as his kid brother has been quick to remind him.

Alan Forrest, who can potentially win promotion with Ayr United this weekend, netted against the Ibrox side earlier this season in a 2-1 Scottish Cup defeat and also netted against Rangers in a League One game back in April 2014.

With 12 major honours – and counting – as a Celtic player, Forrest senior’s trophy haul may well exceed the solitary play-off final promotion from League One with Ayr United which sits on Alan’s CV.

Rangers are the only current top flight club the 26-year-old has not scored against in his nine seasons with Celtic but his form this season. This season has been notable for the winger in that he has hit double figures for Celtic for the first time ever with a haul of 16 goals.

Given the manner in which the Parkhead side dominated against Rangers less than a fortnight ago a Hampden, the chances are that Forrest cold break his duck this weekend.

“I have really enjoyed contributing to the team,” he said. “I am feeling really good and helping the team to beat Rangers would be up there.

“He [Alan] has done really well when he has played against them. Hopefully I can contribute and help the team. He has mentioned it a few times before but it is just a bit of banter. We have one more game and that is a bit of banter but once the game starts I just focus on the team and try to make sure we get the three points and win the game.”

Ayr play Albion Rovers on Saturday before Celtic take on Rangers and there is the possibility of two Championship parties within the Forrest household.

“They have one game left and they can still get automatic promotion,” said the winger. “It would be good if they can do it. If not they might have the play-offs and it would be great for him to get back into the Championship. My Dad has been saying that for the last few weeks [how unusual it would be for both of them to win titles on same weekend] but Ayr have lost their last two games and I think it is out of their hands.

“He has had a good season and I hope they get promoted.”

Forrest, shortlisted for the PFA Player of the Year award, has admitted that if he claims the individual gong it will get pride of place in his living room.

“The team prizes are all in one room but my Player of the Year award is in the living room so that everyone sees it when they walk in!” he joked. “I have them on display [Championship and Cup medals] and I’ve kept them all. You take them for granted a bit when you’re younger and don’t think about your medals that much but , when you get a wee bit older, you realise that it’s really important and you become hungrier for more.

“You want to be even more successful so you’re always looking to the next competition.”

Forrest’s vote went to Kris Boyd at Kilmarnock and John McGinn at Hibs for the Young Player vote since players are prohibited from voting for fellow team-mates.

“It shows that you are respected by other players in the league and shows that you have been consistent all season so it has been great to be nominated,” he said. “The guys you are playing against have taken note of what you have been doing all season. It is good for me personally but it is down to the work you do with your team-mates. That is what you get you nominated.

“I voted for Kris Boyd and John McGinn. I voted for Scott [Brown] for the club awards.”

Celtic need three points to get over the line on Sunday afternoon and claim their seventh successive title. The game against Rangers is a rare opportunity to clinch the Championship against their greatest rivals, a rarity given the manner in which the authorities tend to shy away from pairing the duo together when the title is at stake.

Forrest, though, is determined to savour the experience. With the PFA awards dinner on Sunday evening he could have more than one bit of silverware to add to his collection.

“The boys have a lot of confidence,” he said. “We have had a lot of big games this season and we just want to try and get this league wrapped up as quickly as we can and then get a few games to get ready for the Cup final. We know that Sunday is going to be a hard game and we are going to need to be at it right from the start because every Old Firm game is hard.

“It could be some day. Being nominated is great but the main thing now is getting ready for Sunday and contributing to the team winning on Sunday.”
