THEO SNELDERS hopes history doesn't repeat itself at Ibrox after seeing the contrasting fortunes of FC Twente.

The keeper started his career with the Eredivisie outfit before enjoying a successful spell at Aberdeen and then moving on to Rangers.

The Light Blues haven't had their troubles to seek in recent years and are searching for another new boss following the sacking of Graeme Murty.

But Snelders knows only too well what can happen when there is no strategy in place.

He said: “At Twente it was like a rollercoaster, in 2003 I had two years in the academy and I joined the first team. The club was in administration but a chairman, Joop Munsterman, came in with a three year plan, you went up up up and had no debts. A really good coach came in, we went from selling players to Ajax and Feyenoord then we were selling Orlando Engelaar to Schalke and Marko Arnautovic to Inter.

“They got money in and bought players and developed them. That’s what you need – the tools, a good coach who can teach them good habits, how to live and prepare.

“I don’t know the situation at Rangers but that was how it worked at Twente – they got the chairman in and he got the coach in. The manager went to Schalke.

“Steve McLaren came in and gave it the final touch and we won the title. He got the tools because of the managers before him.

"The team became stronger and stronger and we were defeating Ajax who had Suarez still playing for them. It shows what can be achieved if you give coaches the time.

"But Twente went too far because the chairman wanted to be among the top 30 clubs in Europe and be on the same level as Ajax. He was counting the money from the Champions League and we didn’t get there. When it didn’t happen the whole thing fell apart.”
