Brendan Rodgers has insisted that his summer recruitment plans are well underway as he looks to build on Celtic’s current dominance.

The Parkhead side have opened talks with PSG regarding a permanent move for striker Odsonne Edouard, whose season has been cut short with a confirmed hamstring tear.

However, Rodgers has also revealed that moves are well afoot for bringing in players to strengthen Celtic’s hand as they push for a third successive campaign with Champions League football.

“Peter Lawwell has met with PSG and talks are ongoing so I’m hoping we can come to an agreement,” said Rodgers.

“I know the boy is happy and PSG have enjoyed watching him develop here. It would be great if we could get this one done. He’s still here for his treatment – he

enjoys being here and – you never know – he might make a miraculous recovery for the final.

“He’s struggling to play again this season. We hoped that it was maybe a cramp but it’s looking worse than that so it’s highly unlikely that he’ll feature again. His contract is pretty clear. “

And while he would like to add Edouard to the side on a permanent deal, there are others who are expected to join him.

“We’re conscious that at times Celtic will sell players, but we’re trying to keep the core group of players because there’s a lot of work’s gone into that in the last couple of years,” said the Celtic manager.

“We’ve been trying to create an identity.

“The players will have been loving this success. Of course there will be one or two that may look at other needs, which you can understand.

“But going forward we want to keep improving.

“It’s a difficult market, it’s good to bring in players who are going to be better than what we have. But that’s big big money.

“However, we have to find that way to do that and that’s something we’ll look to do and work’s been ongoing for a while.”

With one eye on the William Hill Scottish Cup final, Rodgers will be wary now of taking any chances with Leigh Griffiths and Moussa Dembele given that Edouard is sidelined.

Griffiths was hospitalised with tonsillitis last week but should be fine for Sunday’s game against Aberdeen.

“I think we’ve got the possibilities to do a number of things,” said Rodgers.

“Leigh will be back in training after the game, so he’s not available for tomorrow night.

“Moussa’s great. Obviously, you’ve got to think between now and the final. But we’ve got other options, like James Forrest can play up there as he did in the Champions League qualifiers. Patrick Roberts has played up there for a few games.”

Goalkeeper Craig Gordon has been sidelined with a knee niggle with Rodgers unwilling to take a chance by asking the veteran stopper to play through it.

“Craig’s not fit just now,” he said. “We’re just monitoring him between now and the final and we’ll just see how he is. It’s his knee.

“There’s just a slight pain in it and it’s not worth the risk. He could play. But we want to ensure we have as many players as fit and strong and available for the final as we can.

“When I have a capable guy like Scotty Bain who can come in then there’s no point in risking Craig. Just let him recover, shut him down for a few days and then look at it again for the weekend.”
