Brendan Rodgers has insisted that he would have no qualms about pitching Craig Gordon into the William Hill Scottish Cup final, even if he has been sidelined for the weeks leading up to the game.

The Parkhead side stand on the cusp of an historic campaign with the possibility of a back-to-back Treble just one game away.

Gordon has missed recent games against Hearts and Kilmarnock with a recurrence of a knee injury but Rodgers would have no issue throwing him in at Hampden against Motherwell if he felt that the Scotland internationalist was physically ready, given the experience he has.

“In the big games, he’s performed great for us,” said Rodgers.

“It’s just going to be about fitness. Hopefully he’s okay but if he’s not then we have a very capable guy in Scott Bain who has come in and been great since the first day he walked through the door.

“I wouldn’t have thought so [that Gordon would be fit for Sunday]. Our idea was to sort of close him down this week and get him back in next week.”

Bain made his debut for Celtic in the 3-2 win over Rangers in March and signed a four-year deal with the Parkhead side this summer.

The 26-year-old is expected to keep his place for the visit of Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon as Celtic take formal delivery of the league Championship and Rodgers has enthused about the contribution of the player who joined on loan on the final day of the January transfer window.

“Scott hasn’t let me down,” said Rodgers. “He’s been absolutely brilliant. It’s one that we’ll always have a look at. It depends on the fitness of Craig.

“We’ll see where he’s at.

“But I know whoever plays, they are both excellent keepers.”

Meanwhile, Leigh Griffiths is expected to be fit for the Scottish Cup final after being hospitalised with tonsillitis.

The striker's campaign has been undermined by injury and illness but he should be available to play some part against Motherwell next weekend, although it remains to be seen if he is fit enough to play against Aberdeen on Sunday.

"He’ll be back in training before the weekend," said Rodgers. "He lost a wee bit of weight so it’s about just getting him energised again. Hopefully he’ll be available for the weekend.

"I can’t play everyone. I’ve got 25 so we’ll just have to wait and see."

Rodgers was also satisfied with the cameo appearance from Ewan Henderson who came off the bench in the stalemate against Kilmarnock on Wednesday evening. The brother of Liam who headed to Bari in Italy, Henderson junior has also come through the club's academy and has caught the eye of Rodgers.

"Young Ewan Henderson is a very good young player. He’s very bright," said the Celtic manager.

"He can handle the ball and take it in. He showed good personality when he came on.

"he’s a boy who has a good future. It will be nice to see him develop."
