BRIAN GILMOUR hopes the appointment of Steven Gerrard as Rangers boss will help the Auchenhowie Academy go from strength to strength in the coming years.

The Liverpool legend will begin work at Ibrox next month as he takes his first steps into management alongside Gary McAllister.

Gerrard has left his position as Reds’ Under-18s boss to make the move to Glasgow and has agreed a four-year deal with the Light Blues.

He will be given funds to bolster his Gers ranks in the transfer market this summer ahead of a shot at the Europa League and crack at the Premiership.

But Under-17s coach Gilmour is determined to push the next generation of Ibrox stars up through the youth ranks and into Gerrard’s thinking.

He told SportTimes: “I think it is adding to where we are and where we are moving to as a club.

“It is great to have a man of Steven Gerrard’s experience and knowledge coming to Rangers and hopefully he can direct us from first team level.

“It is pleasing for us as young, aspiring coaches that we can see that Steven has had that pathway himself and he can pass on his knowledge and experience and we will learn from and feed off his staff.

“I am sure he will take an interest in the youth department and that is the aim at this level and why we exist.

“Our purpose is to provide the first team with players of the level and standard that you expect at Rangers and in a first team jersey.

“I haven’t had a chance to catch up with the new manager at the moment. I am sure we will have a chat as a department when he officially starts.”
