Celtic are believed to be closing in on a permanent deal for French striker Odsonne Edouard – and have until the end of this month to activate their clause for the 20-year-old.

The Parkhead club have until the 31st May to formalise the deal that was agreed when the striker first arrived at the club last August on a season long loan deal from Paris-Saint Germain.

The deal for Edouard is likely to be imminent, all the more so since PSG are facing sanctions from UEFA amidst financial fair play accusations given the £198m they spent on Neymar last season while they are also obligated to buy Kylian Mbappe for £162m following his season long loan deal.

Uefa introduced Financial Fair Play 'break-even' rules in 2013, requiring clubs to balance their spending with their revenue and there are fears within PSG that they could face sanctions, which could include a transfer ban or hefty fine, for their dealings.

Any deal for Edouard will mean Celtic breaking their own transfer record to secure the services of the forward who has netted 11 goals for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season.

The exact fee agreed between the clubs for Edouard is unknown, although Rodgers recently rebuffed suggestions that it was £7m. “I’m not telling you what it is but it’s not that,” he said in the aftermath of Edouard’s winning goal at Ibrox back in March. The inference was that the oft-quoted fee was substantially higher than what Celtic would be required to pay to secure the services of the striker.

The Parkhead side’s current highest transfer fee is in the £6m bracket that they shelled out at the turn of the millennium ago for Chris Sutton, Neil Lennon and John Hartson.

Last term Celtic came close to breaking that with a tabled bid to Manchester City for Patrick Roberts believed to be £10m, which the Premiership side knocked back.

Edouard posted on his Instagram feed that he was “looking forward to the beginning of a long story”, and Parisian media reports have insisted that the player has made it clear that he wants to move to Glasgow on a permanent deal. The player missed the last few weeks of the season with a hamstring injury which meant that he had to sit out the trophy presentation game against Aberdeen as well as the Scottish Cup Final, although he remained in Glasgow to join in with the celebrations.

Talks were held on Sunday afternoon with the players’ representatives and Celtic and it looks like the striker will be the first signing of the summer for the Parkhead side.

Celtic, meanwhile, have confirmed that they will play a pre-season friendly against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght on July 7th. Rodgers side will spent a week in Austria prior to the game against the League of Ireland side.

And Parkhead midfielder Stuart Armstrong has withdrawn from the Scotland trip to Peru and Mexico. The midfielder had a scan yesterday morning amid fears he had suffered a hamstring tear and with the club’s Champions League qualifiers looming, the club and player have opted on the side of caution.
