CELTIC completed their historic double Treble in style on Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Motherwell in the Scottish Cup final.

No other club in Scottish football history has completed this feat and Brendan Rodgers’ men can take a well-deserved break after claiming six out of six domestic trophies under the Northern Irishman.

But one of our readers remembers a rather less successful tilt at the clean sweep from years gone by...

Q: Faither (Pollok)

There has been a lot of talk recently of Celtic winning Trebles. In their Centenary Year in 1988 they won the league and Scottish Cup, but who stopped them winning the Treble by knocking them out of the League Cup?

A: Celtic reached the quarter finals. They faced Aberdeen at Pittodrie, on September 1, 1987. The Dons won 1-0, the only goal being scored by Jim Bett. Aberdeen reached the final, but were beaten by Rangers.

Q: Ozzy (Lanark)

Can you recall the England World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore playing for Fulham against Motherwell at Fir Park around 1976?

A: This was the second leg of an Anglo-Scottish Cup tie on  November 4, 1975. Fulham won 3-2 to take the tie on a 4-3 aggregate. Moore also played in the first leg at Craven Cottage, which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Could you refresh my memory? Rangers had a big win against Morton circa 1987. 7-0 I think. With two Gers players scoring hat-tricks. Who were the
goal scorers?

A: This was a Premier Division match at Ibrox, on September 26, 1987. Rangers did indeed win 7-0 against the Greenock men. Ally McCoist and Mark Falco scored three goals each. Rangers’ other goal was scored by Robert Fleck.

It will be 30 years this year since I attended my first Scottish Cup final. Celtic beat Dundee United 2-1. However, my memory is dimming. Is it true that in both semi final and final, Celtic were losing 1-0, but got two late goals to win 2-1?

A: You are correct. In the semi final Whittaker put Hearts ahead. However goals by McGhee (87 minutes) and Walker (90) won the game for the Celts. In the final they were 1-0 to United, Gallacher scoring for the Tangerines. They fought back with goals by McAvennie in the 75th and 89th, to lift the Cup.
