CARDIFF City manager Neil Warnock has revealed that he wants to set up a pre-season friendly against Celtic or Rangers this summer.

The 69-year-old led the Bluebirds back to the Premier League in the 2017/18 campaign and admitted he has already contacted Hoops manager Brendan Rodgers.

However, the two Old Firm clubs’ involvement in European qualifiers throughout July could stand in the way of a fixture going ahead.

“I spoke to Brendan, but they start quite a bit earlier [than us],” he told TalkSport.

“With Celtic we were going to play them the first week we were back in training, but it was a bit too much.

“And Rangers, they don’t know which part of the European [qualifying] rounds [they’ll be in].

“If it went the other way [much earlier], we’d end up playing a reserve team. It wasn’t worth the gamble really; I though let’s just get on with it.”

The former Rotherham and Crystal Palace boss also revealed that he has been keeping an eye on Scotland as he looks to strengthen his squad in this summer’s transfer window.

“I have looked at two or three players in Scotland,” he said.

“We can’t start bringing stars in from all over the show. We have to bring in five or six players that will fit into the squad.

“They have to be quality players and I have quite a number of options. I am looking at two or three players for every position.

“The money people are talking about is crazy. I value someone at £5m but the club want £12-15m – it is silly money.

“You have got to make the right decisions because we can’t afford to slip up.

“I had a meeting with the chairman Mehmet Dalman last week and we had a chat about budgets and things. I am going over to Malaysia next week and I will catch up with the owner Vincent Tan.

“We won’t throw money at it and we will probably have the lowest budget in the league but so what?

“We shouldn’t have been here when you look at the teams who were around about us. We are going to give it our best shout with the budget we are given.

“If you take the top seven or eight out of it anyone can beat anyone.

“We have to just make sure we keep the spirit we have built up in the squad.”
