RANGERS defender Bruno Alves says Portugal will take the World Cup one step at a time as he prepares for his sixth major tournament in a row.

The veteran centre-back is training with the Selecao in his home country after helping the Gers to a third-place finish in the Ladbrokes Premiership this season.

Portugal will face Spain, Morocco and Iran in Group B next month, but have friendlies against Tunisia, Belgium and Algeria to focus on first.

The defender, who has racked up 95 caps for his country, says his side will not look too far ahead as they look to build on their Euro 2016 triumph with success in Russia.

He told rangers.co.uk: “We have to do what we have done so far, we have to work well, we are ready and we have to think, we have to play the game.

“We have to pass the group stage first and that is our first ambition. Then it is thinking game by game, but always with the ambition that we can do more and better. We are on the right track.

“Morocco are one of the best teams in the world, I think it’s going to be a very difficult game in the World Cup. It will be a tactical game, waiting and no one will want to make a mistake.”

Alves also insisted he has no plans of hanging up his boots for his country despite his advancing years.

“I’m fine,” he said. “I will continue to play my part, trying to help the team, being available, giving my best as I always did until the today. That is my idea, to continue to help and to do the best I know.”
