Rangers appear no closer to landing defensive target Connor Goldson after Brighton are believed to have rejected a second bid for the 25-year-old last week.

However, incoming Rangers boss Steven Gerrard – having targeted recruiting at least two new central defenders during the summer transfer window - looks likely to give the nod on a third attempt to sign Goldson.

Goldson does however appear nearer the exit at the Amex Stadium than he does the Brighton first-team.

Already behind first-choice pairing Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy, Goldson – who only made three league appearances last term - slipped further down the pecking order this week when Chris Hughton signed Nigerian international Leon Balogun from Mainz.

However, it will still cost Rangers around £2m to secure the services of Goldson.

Former West Ham defender James Collins had also been linked with the Rangers, but the Welshman is not viewed as even a short term option.

However, Gerrard is keen to progress a potential move for another Welshman, Liverpool winger Harry Wilson. Back at his parent club after a spell with Hull City in the English Championship last season, the 21-year-old, capped three times by his country, is again likely to be farmed out by Jurgen Klopp for the coming season, with Rangers in the hunt to take him on loan.
