POLLOK supporters have their sights set on a silver-laden (and probably hectic) end to their season.

The Newlandsfield outfit’s 6-0 Central League Cup annihilation of Wishaw last Wednesday night has set up a quarter-final clash away to Rutherglen Glencairn later today and if successful the Lok will secure a last-four clash away to Glasgow Perthshire, while the other half of the draw has Cumbernauld United awaiting the visit of Blantyre Vics.

Their standing as the only top-flight club remaining in the competition is just one of the reasons Tony McInally’s in-form troops (unbeaten in their last 11 outings) are overwhelming favourites to yet again get their hands on the celebrated old trophy they last held aloft in 2016.

Yet despite Lok boss Macca owning up to being satisfied with his side’s performances of late , he is refusing to count his chickens and is urging his playing charges to beware of the Celsius Stadium threat posed by their lower league Ru’Glonian opponents.

He said: “Willie Harvey always gets his players up for games against us and we are fully expecting a typically hard-fought cup tie through there.

“Their strikeforce of Gary Smith, Jay McKay and Liam Gormley are all proven goalscorers and Jamie Hamilton is a very tidy playmaker, while the ex-Pollok factor in Tony Fraser and Ryan McCardle will no doubt have the pair of them pulling out all the stops to try and turn us over.

"We served up a decent performance against Wishaw and it was even more pleasing that we never picked up any injuries so the only player not in my selection thoughts today is Liam Rowan who is ruled out by work commitments.”

Pollok’s designs on the even more lucrative prize of the New Coin Holdings West of Scotland Cup which they dramatically won last season with a penalty shoot-out victory over Cumnock are about to be put to a stiff test on Monday night when hosting Cambuslang Rangers in their outstanding third-round tie that will probably land the winners a quarter-final clash with Hurlford United just two days later.

Macca said: “We have gone from playing just one midweek game in the entire month of May to the prospect of four games in eight days which on the face of it is going to put a huge strain on our playing resources.

“It’s far from ideal but the upside is the guys have been on their A game for a number of weeks and I sense a determination about them to finish the season on a high as serial winners.”

Responding to reports that he has made approaches for Auchinleck Talbot goalkeeper Andy Leishman, one-time Rangers defender Ross Perrie (Albion Rovers), and the Rob Roy duo of Sean Fraser and Danny McKenzie brought a swift rebuttal from the Southside club’s gaffer.

Macca said: “It would be disrespectful for me to comment on players with other clubs when their seasons are still ongoing and anyway nobody can be officially signed at this stage of the season.

“That said I can confirm 14 of the current Pollok squad have extended their contracts to remain at Newlandsfield for next season, inclusive of goalkeeper Jordan Longmuir and the McCann brothers Stuart and Gary.

“The only player definitely leaving the club is Liam Rowan and that’s purely down to availability and not ability as he’s a talented lad with a penchant for scoring goals but unfortunately his work commitments away from football are particularly onerous and we feel a move elsewhere will give him a better chance of playing regularly.”

Recreation Park plays host to another yet to be played New Coin Holdings third-round tie today with Super First Division outfit Darvel strongly tipped to overcome Shettleston and clinch a last eight home tie against Rob Roy on Monday night.

West Region beaks scheduling the remaining quarter-final contests of Beith v Cumnock and Girvan v Auchinleck Talbot to be played this coming midweek (7.30PM Kick Offs) might be intended to pave the way for the semi-finals to proceed next Saturday.

Meanwhile, a strong crowd is anticipated for tomorrow’s final Super First Division league game of the season between Cumbernauld United and Largs Thistle which is a far from meaningless affair if one is a Theesel or Irvine Meadow supporter.

A victory for the visitors will mean automatic promotion for Stuart Davidson’s side at the expense of current fourth placed Medda however any other outcome consigns Largs to a play-off against either Girvan or Arthurlie.
