BRENDAN Rodgers leapt to the defence of Celtic supporters after Aberdeen’s Shay Logan made the shocking claim he had been racially abused at Parkhead and that he expected it to happen again.

Logan was sent off on the last league game of the season, Aberdeen won 1-0 in Glasgow, at the end of the match.

The Englishman clashed with Mikael Lustig and Dedryck Boyata before being dismissed. But as he made his way down the tunnel he continued to celebrate as he was vocally abused by the Celtic support.

This animosity appears to stem from Logan’s being the victim of racial abuse by the former Celtic player Aleksandar Tonev who was hit with a seven-game bad after being found guilty of the charge four years ago.

The accusation of the abuse came in an interview with an Aberdeen newspaper.

Logan was asked if any of the abuse was racial, and he said: “Listen there was, but at the end of the day I expect it now. It’s so forgotten about that it is just the way it is.

“There’s no crying or moaning about it, at the end of the day I’ve got three kids who love me. I deal with it, let them say whatever they want, we move on, there’s other games in the future.”

Rodgers wasn’t aware of the comments but did know there had been issues with Logan in recent seasons.

He said: “It’s not something that you would ever want to see anywhere

“There has obviously been an ongoing thing with young Shay since an incident I was made aware of when I first came in.

“But, listen, the Celtic supporters were voted the best supporters in the world.  And I think that says it all in terms of the ambience at the stadium.”
