BRENDAN Rodgers, the Celtic manager, last night admitted the Parkhead club are working to bring in Daniel Arzani, the teenage winger who played for Australia at Russia 2018, after his side’s 3-1 win over Rosenborg.

Rodgers was delighted after watching the Scottish champions recover from conceding an early goal to their Norwegian rivals in the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round double header.

In particular, the Northern Irishman was impressed with the display of record £9 million signing Odsonne Edouard, who netted two goals to give his team an excellent chance of going through.

But afterwards he stated that he thinks Arzani, a 19-year-old attacking midfielder who currently plays for Melbourne City in his homeland, was a “very talented” footballer.

The Iranian-born player became the youngest to ever represent his country at the World Cup last month when he came on as a substitute against France. He also featured against Denmark and Peru.

“All I know is that he is a young Australian, a very talented player and went to the World Cup where he looked very, very good,” said Rodgers.

“The club are working hard behind the scenes to try and get some signings in. I think he’s been one that has been identified.

“It is not my job. Let's see what players the club brings in. I work with the players that are here, develop them, improve them, that is my job."

Rodgers was without several key Celtic players for the meeting with the Norwegian champions last night and admitted that, having only signed Edouard during the close season, he was keen to bolster his squad.

“It is pretty clear that we are under strength at this moment in time,” he said. “The club are working hard to bring the quality in.

“This is a good quality squad but I only want to bring in players who will improve us and not just add to it. If we can't do that, then we will just work with the players we have.”

Rodgers, who changed the formation after Celtic had fallen behind in the 15th minute to a goal from Birger Meling, claimed that Edouard had exhibited his pedigree by weighing in with two goals.

“He is a class player,” he said. “He has shown it from the first day he walked in the building. For a boy of 20 years of age it is impressive.

“His first goal looked so simple. But when you watch it again his movement to create the space and then just pass it in was excellent. He timed his run for the second goal perfectly. The full-back, the right back, keeps him onside.

“I think that is a mark of top, top strikers – a boy to have that confidence on the big occasion. To show that calmness under pressure was brilliant. He was very good.”

But Rodgers admitted that his side couldn't take their place in the third qualifying round, where AEK Athens of Greece await, for granted despite the two goal advantage they take into the second leg.

“For the first 20 or 25 minutes, I wasn’t overly happy with the shape of the team and that was my fault," he said.

“We just adapted it and went into a much-cleaner shape that the players know. We could then press the game and attack from a better base. The last 15 minutes of the first half and the whole second half, the players were absolutely magnificent.

“It was a real demonstration of their maturity, staying calm under that bit of pressure. By the end, we could have had five or six goals.

“I sat here after a 0-0 last year happy and I thought we could have been better, this year I’m sat in a much-better place with a two-goal advantage, but we know it’s going to be tough over there."
