AS a player, you want to treated with respect by your manager and, of course, you should treat your manager with respect as well.

Steven Gerrard has that relationship with his players and I am sure someone like Greg Docherty will have appreciated that over the last few days.

He waited all his life to get the chance to play for Rangers but now he has been told that he wouldn’t feature every week and that it would be best if he left on loan.

Greg signed for Shrewsbury Town this week and I wish him all the best for the move and the new season.

Rangers will continue to monitor him because he is still in Steven’s long-term plans and this is a chance for Greg to go away and improve himself in England.

I am sure Steven will have spoken to him candidly and he won’t have made the move thinking ‘that is me out the door, I am finished now at the club I wanted to play for’.

He will hopefully get plenty of games this season and the manager will be keeping a close eye on him to see how he is getting on in a new environment.

Normally when you leave a club you go away because you are not performing and it is not happening for you.

That isn’t the situation with Greg, though. He can’t be guaranteed the games he needs right now at Rangers but that doesn’t mean to say he can’t be a big player for us in the future.

Steven has that respect for his players so he will have told Greg the situation face-to-face and hopefully he makes the most of his time away and can prove to the manager why he should be part of his plans next season.
