STEVEN GERRARD admits sanctioning the signing of Allan McGregor this summer was a ‘no-brainer’.

The keeper clinched his return to Rangers and put pen-to-paper on a two-year deal following his departure from Hull City.

McGregor has quickly established himself as first choice between the sticks and turned in another superb showing against Maribor on Thursday evening.

A string of crucial stops were followed by a late penalty save as the Gers progressed to the Europa League play-off round.

Gerrard said: “It was a no-brainer for me.

“I can’t take any credit for the signing of Allan McGregor, it was 99 per cent down the line in terms of the recruitment that went before me

“All I was asked was ‘do you want to tick the box’ and it was probably one of the stupidest questions I have ever been asked to be honest.

“It was a yes straight away and one of those signings that was a no-brainer.

“Experience, good for the dressing room, top professional, top goalkeeper. Ticks every box.

“He is coming back to a place that he helped build over the year so, for me, it was one of the easiest decisions I have ever had to make.”
