FERNANDO ALONSO led all the way to win the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, but local hero Sebastian Vettel was left to look silly after the race.

He slated Lewis Hamilton for being "a bit stupid", but come the conclusion of event, it was the German who had a red face.

Vettel celebrated finishing runner-up to Alonso, who is the first driver this season to win three races.

However, soon afterwards, the 25-year-old was called before the stewards and handed a retrospective drive-through penalty which added 20 seconds to his finishing time.

Vettel was guilty of exceeding track limits following a move on Jenson Button on the penultimate lap to move into second.

In the end, Vettel dropped to fifth, losing eight valuable points in his bid to win a third successive Formula One drivers' world title.

For Button, who brought an end to his miserable run in which he had collected just seven points from six races, justice was served.

The Englishman said: "Sebastian's pass was a pretty straightforward matter. The rules state you can't go off the track to gain an advantage.

"The thing is, there would have been more opportunities for him before the end of the race as my tyres were damaged."

Explaining his actions, Vettel said: "I wasn't sure he was still on the side of me or not, I can't see from the inside of the car, so I tried to give him enough room and went wide."

Alonso's win was Ferrari's 219th and the 30th of the Spaniard's career.

Chances are he has a headache this morning. He said: "That was fantastic, pole position then victory. Tonight we have some parties."

Scotland's Paul di Resta finished eleventh.
