PARTICK Thistle fans are being given the chance to star on the hallowed Firhill turf and play their part in the Jags' First Division title bid next season.

The club have confirmed that the Firhill Cup and family fun day, first run at the end of last season, will return for a second year, giving supporters the chance to lift silverware at the home of their heroes and boost boss Jackie McNamara's transfer kitty.

The tournament sees eight teams, consisting of a maximum squad size of 14 players, split into two groups of four, with the top two teams from each section going into the final and playing for the trophy.

With plenty of other activities on the day, the Jags hope to attract a bumper crowd to the event on Sunday May 13.

Thistle General Manager Ian Maxwell said: "The Firhill Cup proved to be a huge success last season and the club are delighted that it will take place again this year.

"There are still a few places left for fans to enter a team and we are still looking for sponsors for each of the teams.

"Around £6000 was raised last year, all of which was given to the manager to add to his playing budget, and we hope that this year's Firhill Cup will be bigger, better and a great day out for Jags fans."

Chairman David Beattie added: "I was delighted to hear that the Firhill Cup will take place again this year after it had previously looked as if there wouldn't be room for it on the calendar.

"It was a big success last season, raising a not insignificant amount of money for the club.

"What really pleases me is the fact that this is a fans' initiative. It is exactly the kind of thing I think the fans should be involved in."
