THE great and good of Scottish boxing will gather on Sunday for the annual Benny Lynch Certificate of Merit Awards ceremony.

Four fighters will be honoured at the bash - John McCluskey, John McDermott, Bobby Mallon and John Doig - while lifetime membership awards to those over the age of 80 will be given to Doig, Tommy Dignam and James Murie.

The event, which is run by The Scottish Ex-Boxers Association, will see leading promotor Tommy Gilmour present the awards to the guests of honour at the Iron Horse in Glasgow at 2pm.

SEBA chief Hugh Dickson (pictured) is one of the men behind the event and he admits the ceremony comes at an exciting time for Scottish boxing.

"This is the third year we've run the awards and it's been a great success in the past. It's just gone from strength to strength," he said.

"Tommy Gilmour will be doing the honours. Alex Morrison did it last year and has been very good to us, but we are fortunate to have two great promoters in Glasgow who are willing to help.

"Tommy has been a great friend to SEBA and we are thrilled he will be with us on Sunday.

"It's a proper celebration and one that is fitting after this summer. The Commonwealth Games has rejuvenated things around Glasgow and the boxers who were involved did the nation proud.

"We are sure of a big turn-out on another fabulous occasion for Scottish boxing."

Gilmour added: "This is the second time I've been involved with this award ceremony and I'm delighted to help out."

Last year's event saw Ken Buchanan, Dick McTaggart, Evan Armstrong, Dave Mooney and Bobby Kennedy presented with the Benny Lynch Certificate of Merit for services to boxing.
