GLASGOW 2014 boxing hero Charlie Flynn will make his professional debut against English fighter Ibrar Riyaz next weekend.

Scotland's Commonwealth Games lightweight gold medallist will face the experienced journeyman at the Thistle Hotel, Glasgow, on Sunday, December 14.

Riyaz, 29, has a reputation for being a wily mauler who is exceptionally durable, having been stopped only three times in 73 bouts.

Flynn's veteran manager Alex Morrison has no doubt the brawler from Reading will provide a testing introduction to the pro ranks for the 21-year-old postie.

He said: "What we were looking for in Charlie's first professional fight was an opponent who would pose him different challenges to those he had encountered in the amateur game.

"And in Riyaz I think we have done that. He is cute on the inside and likes to rough his opponents up.

"He won't be discouraged easily and, over four three-minute rounds, I am sure that he'll pose Charlie some interesting problems."

Morrison added: "This is the first step in the professional game for Charlie and it is vital that he is learning from the opening bell."

The six-fight card also features the British light-welterweight champ Willie Limond and Jon Slowey, the Scottish featherweight champion who badly needs a win against tough South African Michael Ramabeletsa following the loss of his unbeaten record to Kris Hughes in a Celtic featherweight title fight in June.

Morrison said: "Jon will be topping the bill in what is a vital fight for him.

"After losing to Hughes, when he was on the fringes of the British title scene at nine stone, there is no way that Jon can afford another setback here.

"The show will also feature Stuart Burt, Jamie McGuire and Scott Allan along with Willie Limond."

Tickets for the six fights priced at £90 (including five-course meal) and £50 (including buffet) are available from 0141 554 7777/0000.

Meanwhile, tomorrow's Morrison Promotions show at Rivals Gym, Wishaw, has been called off following a string of withdrawals.
