IT will be an occasion for the Magnificent Seven when the cream of Scottish boxing gathers in Glasgow this weekend.

A band of brothers in the form of the McMillan siblings are to be honoured during Sunday's annual Scottish Ex-Boxers Association bash in the Iron Horse.

Alex, Don, Angus, John, Freddie, Douglas and Gerry are all in line to land the Benny Lynch certificate of merit award for their contribution to the ring, with six of them having competed at a professional level.

It is always a special occasion but given the nature of this year's recipients, it promises to be one of the best and biggest ceremonies yet.

SEBA secretary Hugh Dickson told SportTimes: "Every year we come together to celebrate in large numbers and this weekend will certainly be no exception.

"It is so unique to have such a large contingent of brothers who not only all boxed together, but all competed to a very, very high level.

"The Scottish Ex-Boxers Association is delighted to give them the chance to be recognised once more for their contribution to our sport."

Along with the McMillan brothers, there will also be gongs handed to three other men who have been a credit to Scottish boxing.

Len Mullen, Dick McTaggart MBE and Joe Boland will receive the Lifetime Membership Awards for 2015. They will join John Doig, Tommy Dignam and James Murie who landed the prize last year.

This Sunday's event will see Scottish fight legend Alex Morrison do the honours and present the awards to all men involved. It comes just a few months after he was present at SEBA's Boxer of the Year bash.

Dickson added: "We are very grateful and obviously delighted to have Alex come and help us out with the ceremony.

"As always, he has been very supportive and remains a great friend to SEBA and everyone involved. We really appreciate his support.

"There will be a host of big names from the past who are expected to be in attendance and we are hopeful some of the young crop of fighters coming through will join us.

"It is a great time for Scottish boxing, and this will be another fine occasion."

The event will take place in the Iron Horse on West Nile Street, Glasgow and starts at 2pm.

Elsewhere, Glasgow's Sean Lazzerini won boxing gold on day four of the Commonwealth Youth Games in Apia, Samoa which saw a glut of medals for Team Scotland.

The Scots won six medals to take their current total to 20 with the boxing squad in particular producing outstanding performances; as well as Lazzerini's gold, John Docherty, Billy Stuart and Kieran McMaster all won medals.

Lazzerini was fighting in the 81kg class and having won his semi-final bout inside the first round, the 18 year-old went into the final feeling fresh.

The Bellahouston Boxing Club fighter wasted no time in claiming gold with a body shot stopping his Tongan opponent in round one. “I’m just so happy I did it and I did it for Scotland,” he said. “I wish it had gone a bit longer but I did the job I came here to do and got that gold medal. It means the world to me, it feels amazing, I can’t put it into words.

“When the national anthem was playing and the flag was going up I could feel tears. I absolutely loved it, I could do it all again tomorrow.”

Just fifteen minutes before Lazzerini's victory, Docherty had won Scotland's second gold medal of the Games to add to swimmer Erin Robertson's gold that she won earlier in the week. Eighteen-year-old Docherty from Montrose defeated Ben Whittaker from England in the 75kg class and he was understandably overjoyed with his performance. "It’s an unbelievable feeling- the gold is coming back to Scotland!" he said. "I just can’t believe how far I’ve come to get gold. Now I’m aiming for the next Commonwealth Games in Australia [in 2018] and I’ll be going for that gold again! I’m a senior next year and this is going to give me a big boost."

Billy Stuart from McDuff was defeated in the final of the 56kg class to claim silver while Kieran McMaster from Kilmarnock won bronze in the 64kg class to ensure that every member of Team Scotland's boxing squad will return home with a medal.

Meanwhile, swimmer Meg Finnon won her second medal of the Games when she claimed silver in the 800m freestyle and tennis players Ewen Lumsden and Louie McLelland won silver in the mixed doubles. Lumsden will have a second chance to win gold though when he goes in the boys singles final.
