THE GREAT and the good of Scottish boxing will gather in Glasgow tomorrow for the annual SEBA Boxer of the Year awards.

In an event that has become a highlight of the sport’s calendar in recent years, the Scottish Ex-Boxers Association will hand out the top prize to Commonwealth Games gold medallist Josh Taylor.

The Edinburgh-based 25-year-old, knowns as the Tartan Tornado, has gone undefeated since turning to the pro ranks at super featherweight, with the highlight coming last February when he knocked out Lyes Chaibi at the Manchester Arena.

As well as Taylor receiving this year’s top gong after Willie Limond was crowned last year, there will also be several other awards handed out.

Scottish boxing legend Jim Watt will have his achievements in the sport recognised when he is presented with a special trophy from fight boss Alex Morrison.

The late Johnny Morrison, who passed away in December, will also be represented by his son Barry who will receive a special certificate from boxing icon Ken Buchanan.

Current SEBA president Dick McTaggart will also be presented with the Chair of Office in the special ceremony.

Hugh Dickson, the association secretary, told SportTimes: “Every year this is an even that all the members look forward to and this year it is no different.

“Scottish boxing continues to go from strength to strength and it is wonderful that SEBA is playing a part in recognising the achievements of the next generation.

“We are very grateful to Alex for once again supporting us, and he is hopeful Ricky Burns and Charlie Flynn will also be joining him this Sunday.”

The event will be held at the Iron Horse on West Nile Street and starts at 2pm.
