RICKY BURNS' new trainer has put evolution before revolution in his quest to rekindle the Scot's career.

Tony Sims will be in his corner for the first time when the former two-weight champion hits the comeback trail against Dejan Zlaticanin next Friday at the Braehead Arena.

The Englishman took over from long-term coach Billy Nelson in the aftermath of Burns' defeat to Terence Crawford in March, which cost him the WBO lightweight title.

But he has ruled out conducting major surgery on the Scot's ring skills.

He said: "Ricky is 31 and has won the world title at two different weights so there is no way I would come in and change all of that.

"What I have tried to do is to sharpen up Ricky's skills and add little bits here and there.

"Ricky has a great jab, tremendous hand speed and his work ethic is fantastic. Instead it has been about a fresh pair of eyes coming in and little refinements being made here and there."

Burns has been encamped at Sims' London gym for the last couple of months where he has been sparring with old foe Kevin Mitchell.

The Scot stopped the Cockney in four rounds in 2012 at the SECC, but Sims has no doubt that having the duo train with each other has benefited both boxers.

He said: "I am lucky to be working with the two best lightweights in the country and they will push each other on.

"From what I am seeing in training each day we should have Ricky back to his best at the Braehead Arena next Friday."
