The 34-year-old had to pull out of a second defence of his title against African opposition at the St Andrew's Sporting Club Burns Night show 11 days ago.

Now Limond's promoter Tommy Gilmour has written to the British Boxing Board of Control asking for a double-belt battle with British champion Darren Hamilton, with the Scot meeting his mandatory challenger if Hamilton wins his defence against Curtis Woodhouse on February 22.

The St Andrew's supremo said: "I think if Willie's Commonwealth title is also up for grabs that would make things very appealing for Hamilton.

"But for both boxers the opportunity to become British and Commonwealth champion at the same time has to be attractive.

"I would be hopeful the board will sanction that one, if of course, Hamilton prevails over Woodhouse."

Gilmour is also keen to manoeuvre Paisley puncher Kris Carslaw into title contention at light-middleweight after his defeat last Saturday of Max Maxwell, a boxer who holds a KO victory over British champion Brian Rose.

Gilmour said: "He gave Rose all the trouble he could handle when they met two years back and that was despite Kris having to box for 10 rounds with a horrific head gash.

"So Kris deserves another shot at the Lonsdale belt.

"So we will ask the question of the Board for both Willie and Kris and hopefully they will come up with answers we will like."
