ALEX MORRISON today branded Scott Harrison's Twitter claim he would fight Ricky Burns any day of the week as "laughable".

The former WBO featherweight champion posted a tweet yesterday, directed at Burns' trainer Billy Nelson - who cut his teeth in Harrison's corner - stating: "If Billy Nelson is reading this, Scott Harrison will fight Ricky Burns any day of the week, then we'll see who's the better fighter."

The former WBO nine-stone champion's licence is currently revoked by the British Boxing Board of Control until Harrison confirms he has no legal cases to answer in the Spanish courts.

And Big Alex, who masterminded Harrison's three-fight comeback following a seven-year absence from the ring - which ended in April last year with a points defeat in a European title challenge against Liam Walsh - was in no mood to pull his punches.

The fight godfather said: "I find Harrison's claims laughable, since, at the moment, he does not have a boxing licence. The disappointing thing about all of this is that if Scott had stayed with me and continued his comeback a fight with Ricky Burns was a distinct possibility."

While SportTimes understands Harrison is likely to launch a fresh appeal to have his licence reinstated, the likelihood of an all-tartan tear-up with deposed WBO lightweight champion Burns has long gone.

The latter has taken a short family holiday in the wake of his disappointing world title defeat by Terence Crawford last weekend, but it is understood a June 28 date in Glasgow has been reserved for Burns' return.

Yet it is hard not to indulge a flight of fancy over what would have happened had the duo laced up in their respective primes.

Would Harrison have been able to get past the Burns' rapier right jab to unleash his ferocious close-quarter combinations or just found the Coatbridge fighter too big to burn?

It is one of the great frustrations of Scottish sport we will probably never find out!
