STEWART BURT is in the mood for some Happy Days over the festive period ahead of his bust up with the Fonz this weekend.

The Newton Mearns fighter will embark on his first professional match-up on Sunday night when he takes on rival Fonz Alexander, an orthodox welterweight from Nottinghamshire.

The bout at the Thistle Hotel in Glasgow has been a long time coming for the ambitious 24-year-old who had endure a summer at home while his pals went off to star in the Commonwealth Games.

And while two of Team Scotland's brightest talents will be on Sunday's Morrison's Promotions show's line-up also making their debuts - Charlie Flynn and Joe Ham - Burt is keen to make up for lost time and prove he can carve out a name for himself.

"The spotlight has been on Charlie Flynn and Joe Ham. To be honest, I'm just focused on me and what I'm going to do," he told SportTimes.

"I'm hoping for a win and that's it. I'm not one of these guys who says they are after a knockout, you need to be realistic. It's about a win and a good performance to show everyone I can hold myself up along with these other guys.

"There's talk about a show late February or end of March. So if that happens I can have a good Christmas before going straight back into January 1.

"It would be the perfect Christmas present to win, that's for sure. This is my biggest fight to date so to get a nice wee result would be great."

While the likes of Flynn and Ham have had the experience of competitive boxing in the Glasgow games, Burt has spent six months preparing himself for the opportunity which is about to come his way.

The last taste of a real fight came in early June when he was part of a pre-Games Team Scotland convoy which flew to Australia for preparation ahead of the Glasgow event.

And while the electrician was delight to be involved, Burt explained how he ended up travelling halfway round the world for just two rounds.

"My last competitive fight would have been back in Australia in June, so I've been out of the ring since then," he said.

"It was when Team Scotland went over for a month or so. It was a pre-Commonwealth Games fight against some of the people they might be up against.

"It was great to go with them. I boxed an Australian but the fight actually got stopped in the second round because he had a cut so I won. It was a long way to go for two rounds!

"I still enjoyed the experience and it is a great thing to take with me."

Speaking about 26-year-old Alexander, Burt added: "I don't know a great deal about him.

"I think he's had a few professional fights [five defeats and two wins]. What I do know is he has a reputation of being a bit of a tough guy, he'll come to fight that's for sure.

"I've conditioned myself well and I've trained far too hard for someone to come up here and spoil my party this weekend."
