A CERTAIN football club in Glasgow has supporters who passionately sing the words ‘and if you know the history’ when roaring on their team.

But now Braehead Clan fans are about to embrace their own past with a new scheme that will commemorate the men who have made the biggest impact at Scotland’s top ice hockey club.

The Purple Army have come to see the Braehead Arena as home since their team’s inception six years ago, with more than 3000 of them regularly pouring into the Clyde side venue.

Now they will be able to cheer the class of 2016 on while celebrating those of past seasons as club bosses introduce a Hall of Fame, starting from this week.

Beginning on Friday night and continuing for the next four home matches, Braehead will reveal a giant banner that will acknowledge the biggest contribution made each season to the Clan.

Hierarchy at the club’s HQ are staying tight-lipped over who will be the first man to unveiled, but SportTimes can reveal more details about the tributes.

Each player will be commemorated with a huge image 8.5metres high and 1.5m wide, with all five draped over the far wall inside the Braehead Arena.

They will feature a photo of the player, along with their name, number and the season they signify.

It is Braehead’s intention that a player will continue to be added for every season from now on.

Gareth Chalmers, Clan hockey operations director, said: “This is the culmination of a lot of hard work over the last year so it’s nice to see it coming together at last.

“The club have been going for a few years now and the fans have a proud, if short history, and it’s something we thought we should celebrate.

“It’s something different and we have been wanting to make the arena more aesthetically pleasing and more homely, and this seems the perfect way of doing just that.

“We wanted to invest in the arena and do something for the fans, and we all hope they like it.”

The first name will be announced tomorrow ahead of Braehead’s home match on Friday night with Manchester Storm, a game that could see Clan begin to reel in second-placed Sheffield Steelers and top side Cardiff Devils.

Meanwhile, Clan fans tracking the career of former lock-out star Drew Miller will be disappointed to find out the Detroit Red Wings man is set for a prolonged period on the sidelines.

Miller came to Glasgow in 2012 while the NHL season was in meltdown across the pond, and the Stanley Cup winner became an instant hit with the Clan support during his short stint in Scotland.

This season, the left wing was out for 14 games due to a fractured jaw and only returned two matches ago.

However, it has now emerged the 31-year-old is out for at least 10 more games following a tear in his knee during the Red Wings’ match in LA on Sunday night.
