BEN DAVIES is out to take one step closer to his first piece of silverware as Braehead Clan seek to make it into the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

The Glasgow side take on Nottingham Panthers at the Braehead Arena on Wednesday night 5-4 down in aggregate after a dramatic first leg at the National Ice Centre earlier this month.

However, going in narrowly behind is not enough to dampen the dreams of the ambitious Welshman, who is set to meet up with his Great Britain team-mates next month for their Olympic qualifiers.

“It sucked losing the first leg, especially being 4-0 down at one point,” said the 25-year-old. “But we all showed good characters to claw it back, so in that case losing 5-4 is not a bad scenario.

“We have since gone back to focusing on the league and that’s where we are on a seven game unbeaten run. Fingers crossed we can keep it going.

“One goal is nothing. We are hoping to come out strong, chase the game and get the win we need.

“It’s taken us a little while to get a run going. Earlier on in the season we were winning one or two then losing, so it’s good to get a run of games under our belt.

“At the moment it feels that we are working harder and harder each game to keep it going. With 17 games left in the season we are chasing those above us.”

From a personal point of view, Davies is enjoying life on Clyde side.

The former Cardiff Devil has already equalled his goal tally of 10 from last season in purple, and is well on the way to going way beyond in the coming weeks.

For Davies, though, his ambitions this season have a silver lining.

“I have been enjoying my hockey all season if I’m being honest,” he said.

“I feel that my performances might have been a little better early on in the year, but now I seem to be putting the puck in the net a little bit more.

“There are things I have to work on but I’m enjoying playing with my line-mates. Me, Haywood and Nesbitt seem to be doing well and know what we want to get out of each other.

“As a player, it would be unbelievable to win the Challenge Cup. I’ve never won a trophy at club level so it would be huge.

“For the fans, they deserve it. We want to give back to them because they are superb every week for us. As a club, we want to put them on the map more.

“To do that we need to take care of Nottingham first. Things are looking up.”
