JORDAN BUESA admits he is in dreamland as the school boy prepares to juggle his Highers and hockey after becoming Braehead Clan’s first ever apprentice.

The 16-year-old from Troon put pen to paper earlier this week on a ground-breaking deal that will see the Wellington School pupil realise his dream of signing for not just any pro ice hockey club, but the one he has supported from Day One.

Clan head coach Ryan Finnerty says Buesa, whose dad Santiago used to play for the Ayr Bruins, will take part in pre-season games before potentially being loaned out to get some ice time.

And speaking exclusively to SportTimes, the talented teenager revealed his excitement at the rare opportunity offered up to him.

“My dad used to play hockey and ever since I could walk he had me in skates,” he said.

“My first club was North Ayr and they’ve helped me development and made me the player that I am now.

“I’ve been on the ice since I was the age of two and I’ve not stopped. I was in Canada this year at the Toronto Titans where I was being coached by the former Toronto Maples Leaf Darcy Tucker.

“I had a really good season over there and when it finished Clan got in contact with me to tell me their idea of bringing me in as an apprentice.

“I’ve always supported the Clan and my dad and I were both at their first ever game when they played in Dundee.

“I’ve been a regular ever since so this has been a bit of a dream for me.”

Buesa’s level-headedness is clear as he looks to forge a career in the sport he loves.

While eager to make his dream of one day becoming a senior Braehead player a reality, the committed youngster is not prepared to turn his back on his studies in the process.

“I’m still at school and will be doing my Highers at Wellington School in Ayr,” explained Buesa, who only turned 16 in March.

“I’ll be training in the morning with the rest of the guys then whenever that finishes I’ll be straight back to school. I’ll also stay on for evening classes to catch up.

“They are very supportive of me and have gone out their way to make this happen.

“I knew Ryan before because I got on to train with the team a few times before I went to Canada.

“To begin with it was a real eye-opener for me. I watched these players as a fan and now I’m training with them.

“Ever since I first got started I have loved this game and I just want to keep playing for as long as I can.

“My family have made a lot of sacrifices to get me here and I’m looking forward to working hard and seeing where it takes me.”

Buesa is not the only new recruit to arrive on Clyde side this week after it was revealed Edinburgh Capitals ace Callum Boyd will be in purple for the new campaign.

The Scot has spent the last two seasons at Murrayfield and at 22 is expected to offer plenty of energy and bite going forward for the Gardiner Conference champions.
