BRAEHEAD CLAN have announced that forward Alex Leavitt has become the club's 12th signing of the summer.

The Canadian made a name for himself with the Clan last season after coming in from German side Ravensburg Towerstars a year ago.

Leavitt will take the number 12 jersey for next season after agreeing to stay on for another campaign in Glasgow.

The 32-year-old's signature comes as a boost for head coach Ryan Finnerty, as he was Braehead's top points scorer in 2015/16 with 24 goals and 58 assists in 64 appearances.

"Levy’s a guy that grew on me last year,” Finnerty said.  Glasgow Times: Braehead Clan v Nottingham Panthers Ice Hockey match at Braehead arena. Clan head coaach Ryan Finnerty.. Photograph by Colin Mearns.27 January 2016.

“When we broke down some analytical video over the summer, we quickly realised whatever line he was on, that was the one producing.

“He’s one of those guys you have to see to appreciate and a player everyone wants to play with.  In the exit meetings, the other guys spoke of how much they wanted to play with him.

“Alex has great vision and his hockey IQ is high and has produced in every year he’s ever played and is a guy we value.

“I like him not only as a player, but as a person, but I enjoy coaching him and I like what he brings to the dressing room.  With that in mind, I’m glad we’ve brought him back.”

Gary Russell, Scott Aarssen, Cody Carlson, Zach Sullivan, Callum Boyd, Matt Haywood, Matt Keith, Bari McKenzie, Craig Peacock, Scott Pitt and Daniel Åhsberg have also signed on since the end of last season.

But Finnerty warned Leavitt that he can't afford to rest on his laurels during his second term, as the weight of expectation on him has grown.

"Alex is going to be a big player for us so we’re going to expect more from him," said the coach.

"He’ll be an offensive guy and will create opportunities for others.

"We also want to put guys around him that compliment him.  He’s the kind of winger that can give guys some career years, with a good centreman, he can be dangerous.”
