A HEARTBREAKING goal 20 seconds from time denied Braehead Clan their third win on the bounce on Sunday night.

Ryan Finnerty’s men were stunned by Jordan Pietrus’ strike in the dying moments down in Coventry as the Blaze burned Clan’s recent resurgence in a 3-2 defeat.

Liam Stewart, son of rocker Rod, opened the scoring for the home side at the Skydome, slamming in a fine finish with an assist from former Purple Army hero Ben Davies.

Scotty Pitt and Matt Beca turned the game on its head to put Braehead into the lead. However, it would only set them up for a fall.

Team GB internationalist Davies came back to haunt his former team to shoot beyond Gary Russell in the Clan goal, and with the game heading towards overtime Pietrus struck late on to steal the two points.

It was a bitter pill to swallow for Finnerty’s men given what they had put into the game and the momentum taken into the match, a rare thing given their stuttered start to the campaign.

Just 24 hours earlier Braehead hit the ice skating after a rare weekend off to blow away Manchester Storm 5-2 down in Altrincham.

Kyle Wharton, Matt Haywood, Alex Leavitt (2) and Pitt were the scorers in the EIHL encounter.

The results mean Braehead remain just a point off the bottom of the Elite League table after playing 14 games with another three weeks on the road stretching ahead of them while the Braehead Arena is out of commission.

Next up is a trip back down to Manchester for Clan on Saturday in what is already looking like a key game for Finnerty and his players. A tricky trip to Wales to face Cardiff Devils the following night awaits.
