BRAEHEAD CLAN director Gareth Chalmers believes the Purple Army will see a different side to the ‘unacceptable’ one prior to the side hitting the road last month.

The Glasgow side spent the whole of November away from Clyde side in what couldn’t have been a worse time as they were still attempting to gel as a cohesive unit.

A slow start to the EIHL season left Clan well off the title pace following a high squad summer turn over, with them now returning to the Braehead Arena eighth in the table.

Chalmers was speaking during a live Evening Times Facebook show yesterday from Clan HQ, where he conceded improvement had to be made from the first two months of the campaign.

However, he insists the team finally look like turning a corner as they prepare for tonight’s homecoming game against the Dundee Stars.

“It’s all about consistency,” said Chalmers. “We’re just trying to find that at the moment.

“The month out is really hard on the guys. They don’t have ice here at Braehead and they are training down at Auchenharvie and through in Edinburgh. It’s not easy and it takes it out of the guys.

“The consistency of the games over the last month has been concerning. We’re at about 50/50 hockey at the moment which is not where we want to be as an organisation.

“We’re working hard to rectify that and hopefully now we’re back on home ice we’ll start to see a few more wins.

“We’ve said more than once that this organisation needs to win and must be at the top end of the table. Unfortunately this happens in hockey sometimes but you just need to stick together.”

Chalmers also spoke about the decision to changing branding of the Clan to incorporate the word ‘Glasgow’.

The hockey and operations director explained the thought process about altering the way the organisation is marketed, and believes it is imperative if they are to emerge as a notable destination on the world hockey map.

“From day one the club was going to be called the Glasgow Clan,” explained Chalmers. “The ownership then opted for Braehead.

“It’s worked very well for us in the greater Glasgow area in terms of having Braehead in the name, unfortunately for us to grow further as an organisation we are going to start incorporating Glasgow into the brand.

“We’ve got to the stage now where we are filling the arena pretty well and for brand awareness, especially across the pond in north America, Glasgow is a lot more sellable than Braehead.”

Braehead Clan’s new defenceman Harry Quast also spoke in the Facebook show about his excitement at experience a home Braehead crowd just days after joining.

The former New Hampshire University man put pen to paper on a deal earlier this week and will get his first skate out tonight for the 7pm face off against the Stars.

“It’s been a pretty long week of travelling and getting acclimatised to everything,” said the 25-year-old. “I’m excited for tomorrow and getting into a game finally.

“Everyone has been talking about how great the crowd is going to be and how great our arena is for the entire time I’ve been here.

“I’m excited to get going.”
