BRAEHEAD CLAN have recruited Swedish defenceman Christoffer Bjorklund for the 2017/18 season.

The 29-year-old has arrived at the Braehead Arena after spending last season with fellow Elite League outfit Sheffield Steelers, before ending the campaign in his home country with Mora IK.

Bjorklund's move to Sheffield last summer was his first step away from Sweden and he went on to make 55 appearances for the club, scoring five goals and contributing 21 assists as well as playing in the Champions Hockey League.

The Purple Army's new number 5 says he is looking forward to the Braehead Arena becoming his home ground after enjoying the atmosphere during his league trips there last term.

“My recollection of Braehead was them having a great arena to play in and really supportive fans, getting behind the team,” Bjorklund said.

“It was loud when I was there.  For me, it wasn’t intimidating at all and an atmosphere like that gets me going.

“I found that at Sheffield as well and that’s where you get that extra percentage when you go into a game.

“My experience in the league before was part of my decision to sign for Braehead.  I spoke a lot to Michal Zajkowski and he spoke positively about his time at the club.

“I can’t wait to come over and it will be a good season for us.”

Clan coach John Tripp pinpointed the new arrival's work rate as one his greatest assets as he welcomed the Swede to Scotland.

“Christoffer is a player I know about and I feel his skill set will suit us perfectly for what we want to do this season,” he said.

“Sweden has a very strong development program and Swedish players see the ice very well which will help speed up our transition game.

“The fact he had that experience with Sheffield last season will help some of the newer players in the team going forward.

“His industrious style of play will also be a huge asset for us going forward and while he’s not the tallest player, what he does with the puck more than makes up for that.”
