DEDRYCK BOYOTA has urged Celtic not to down tools before next week’s second leg against FC Stjarnan.

The defender marked his Celtic Park debut with a goal in the 2-0 win over the Icelandic champions to give Ronny Deila’s side the chance of progressing to the next round of qualifiers.

However, Boyata has insisted that Celtic need to be mindful that they are not just there yet and they still need to finish off the job in Iceland next Wednesday.

“We could have killed the game early, but we still managed to score two goals and could have got more,” he said.

“But we all know this game is never over after 90 minutes. We have to go for 180 minutes and make sure we go through.

“We are confident. Playing away games is never easy but we have the better players and hopefully we can finish it off.”

Boyata’s appearance last night was his first competitive first-team display for 18 months.

Signed in a £1.5million deal this summer from Manchester City the defender’s last game was in the Capital One cup.

His departure from the field with just eight minutes of regulation time remaining due to cramp, however, put a dampener on his night.

“I’m not really happy as I wanted to finish the game. What happened didn’t put me in a good mood,” said the 24-year-old.

“I’m disappointed because it was my first game and I wanted to show as much as possible.

“You can score four goals, five goals…it wouldn’t put you in a good mood when that happens.

“If I’d scored 10 goals in a game and have to come off before the end I’d be disappointed.

“But hopefully it’s something I can sort relatively quickly as the competitive games have started now.

“I’m tired but happy with the win. “

Meanwhile, Deila remains confident that Nadir Ciftci will come good for the Hoops once he has had a chance to find his feet at his new club.

The striker started the game against Stjarnan but missed a couple of decent opportunities before being replaced by Anthony Stokes in the latter stages of the tie.

“Nadir looked a little bit tired but he’s not trained very much,” said Deila.

“But I think 2-0 is a good result. I hoped we could have finished the game off and we had chances.

“We weren’t effective enough and it’s disappointing we didn’t score more but a clean sheet is good.

“I’d say we have a very good chance to make the next stage.

“They had a couple of chances in the second half so it was good that they didn’t score. Overall I’m happy but not overly excited.

“It was a good game for our two new players.”
