Charlie Mulgrew is happy to play wherever he is asked – so long that he is involved in Ronny Deila’s side.

The utility man started at left-back as Celtic triumphed in Iceland this week and he is content to play there should Deila want him to continue to take over from Emilio Izaguirre.

“I’m used to it now – I’m just happy to be available to play and play my part,” he said.

“If someone was to ask me what my position was I’d say utility man – a Jack of all trades!

“I can only see it as a positive, really. It means I’ve got a better chance of playing if I can play in different positions so I’m happy with that.

“It’s a team game, it’s not about me or where I want to play.

“It’s about I can help this team to get wins and pick up points, qualify and win trophies. It’s not about me, it’s about the team.

“If you ask me where I’m happiest playing I’d say wherever I’m playing well. If you don’t play well in one position it’s easy to turn around and say I hate playing there.

“But I thought I might play at left-back in Iceland because I played there in the friendly in Eibar last weekend.

“It was in the back of my mind even though no-one said anything to me. I was just happy to be playing in the game and delighted to score.”

And Mulgrew believes that Celtic cannot afford to obsess over the 7,000 mile journey to Azerbaijan for their second leg against Qarabag. The Hoops play the Azerbaijan side at Celtic Park on Wednesday before the return leg a week later.

“You can’t put too much focus on the journey or anything like that,” he said.

“You’ve just got to get on with it and prepare as best you can.

“You just get there, rest, train and make sure you’re ready. We’ll be doing everything we can to be ready for that match.

“But the most important thing is that we’re 100 percent focused.

“You learn from experience when you go to these places.

“No, it’s not often you make these long journeys. The last one was Kazakhstan but we all know the right things to do.

“We’re going there a day earlier too which helps – the earlier we get there the better.”
