RONNY DEILA lamented the “stupid mistake” that ultimately led to Celtic dropping two Europa League points against Fenerbahce. Goals from Leigh Griffiths and Kris Commons had the Parkhead side well in command against the Turks but an error from Efe Ambrose, whose header back to Craig Gordon lacked power, allowed Fernandao to close the gap just before half-time. That mistake was compounded when the same player got away from Ambrose to head Fenerbahce level early in the second half, with Celtic having to settle for a draw for the second European game in succession.

Deila said: “In the first half we started a little bit nervously and they had a bit over us. But after 10 or 15 minutes we were more comfortable on the ball, and starting to play and get crosses in. We then scored two very nice goals and had control over them. But then we make a stupid mistake – and that happens in football – but you get punished very hard for that when you are in Europe.

“We then started the second half poorly and they got back to 2-2 from a set-play which is something we need to sort out. We finished the game better but didn’t create enough big chances so I’m a little bit disappointed. But I’m happy with the effort the boys put in today.”
